It would be so easy to read the cover description for Her Cowboy’s Promise and think “light hearted romance”. It is, yet it is so very much more than that. This is an emotional story for both Emily and Adam. It’s learning to deal with grief and the guilt of being the one still living in a couple separated by death. It’s learning to live and trust again, putting yourself “out there” to see what happens next. It’s not easy to start over again, but Emily is trying in this small town that rallies around her at every turn. She’s building a new life, and if the sadness and grief from her previous life still steps in, well at least she’s doing better. Soon she’ll have the chance to grab a new future, one with every promise still to be given… if she’s brave enough to take that chance once more.
Adam hadn’t intended to stay in this small town a moment longer than necessary. he had a promise to keep, and he’d do that but no more. This town brought back too many memories – and the one woman who could change his mind.
Her Cowboy’s Promise is an emotional romance. One that will hit some people hard. There is an intense focus on Emily’s grief. That will affect some readers who don’t want that deep of a reality in a romance, in my opinion. Everyone grieves in their own way and in their own time, for Emily this was her way. Eventually she comes back to the reality standing right in front of her, but it’s not an easy journey for her. There are intense moments, yet also lighthearted ones. As Emily and Adam begin to see beyond grief and the past their path to their own happiness lies open and waiting for them. The question becomes, will they reach for it.
I enjoyed this story, it’s emotional, and real. It also has me curious as to what the author would bring us next. And that I’ll be watching for.
