Giving a present is not always easy. Clover O’Brian knows that only too well: her job consists of helping people in the arduous task of choosing unusual gifts. Christmas is coming, New York is buzzing, and Clover, who has always loved the festive period, savors the atmosphere.
Cade Harrison already has everything in life. A Hollywood actor, he is handsome, rich, famous and popular. Success, however, has its downsides; having just emerged from a disastrous relationship with an actress, he feels a need to hide away in an area unfrequented by stars, in an apartment lent him by a friend, far from prying eyes – especially those of tabloid reporters. But as chance will have it, the apartment in question is right opposite the one occupied by Clover, who until now has seen Hollywood actors only on the big screen. Two quite different lives meet by chance, at the most exhilarating time of year.
Read on for my thoughts on A New York Love Story. No true spoilers, promise.
I found A New York Love Story to be a fun, slightly quirky Christmas read to set that holiday mood. Admittedly it took me a few chapters to get into the core of the story. I’m a reader who prefers that background information be shown to me in actions or dialog instead of being told. Every author and reader, for that matter, are different. Once I got into the heart of the story of Clover and Cade I was hooked.
Clover is a unique character – unfortunately her family are quite nasty pieces of work and earned my instant dislike. It was a very interesting pairing of an actor who simply wants to work his craft, not be a celebrity with a cute, doesn’t really understand her uniqueness, ordinary young woman. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. Of course, there are the misunderstandings but eventually love proves that it’s who the person is that truly matters to the heart.
Christmas in New York is always a magical time of year. Somehow the city dons it’s holiday cheer and sparkles for the world to enjoy. The descriptions of the city in it’s Christmas finery were delightful and made this massive city a character of its own in this story.
If you’re ready to get your holiday mood and reading started, then A New York Love Story is a charming way to kick things off.
*I received an e-ARC of A New York Love Story from the publisher, Aria and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
