Raised by their divorced, lapsed Amish father and English mother, siblings Jonny, Martin, Kelsey, and Beth can’t wait to reinvent their lives. The four don’t have much in common, but they long for the stable sense of family they felt when visiting their New Order grandparents, Josiah and Sylvia Schrock, in peaceful Holmes County, Ohio. And the Schrocks couldn’t be more surprised when the grandkids want to try living with them—and joining their faith . . .

When Jonny hears startling news about his health, he knows it’s past time to change his life. Quitting college, he unexpectedly finds the fulfilling job of his dreams. And he’s instantly smitten with cafe owner Treva Kramer, whose baked goods are as warm and delicious as her lively personality. But no matter how hard Jonny tries, he can’t seem to get past her secret sadness and distrust. Can he prove that his feelings for her are for real—and forever—in time?

A bad breakup left Treva heartbroken—and resolved to be independent without relying on anyone ever again. Exhausted from pouring everything she’s got into her cafe, she’s stunned by Jonny’s easygoing ways—and drawn to his optimistic nature. But when she thinks his real interest is in becoming Amish, she’s even more determined to stay focused—and keep her heart safe . . .

Soon, deep secrets and hidden family truths will test Jonny and Treva in unexpected ways. And with help from his warm-hearted grandparents, he and Treva might gain the happiness they secretly long for—with each other.

Title:  B is for Bonnet
Series:  Amish ABCs #2
Author:  Shelley Shepard Gray
Published:  January 21, 2025
Publisher:  Kensington Books
My Rating:  4.5 stars

B is for Bonnet is the second title in the Amish ABCs series, and picks up immediately where the first book, A is for Amish, left us.  For that reason, I will highly recommend reading this series in order, if at all possible, as one story flows into the next almost seamlessly.

This time, the focus is on Jonny, a young man in college facing unexpected health issues, as it’s now his turn to spend a year at his grandparents’ farm, living an Amish life as he searches his heart for the right pathway for him.  He’s left college, and without mentioning those health issues to his family, has begun to settle into the Amish way of life, finding a satisfying job in a bicycle shop, and discovering Treva’s cafe, where the most delicious coffee makes every day enjoyable.  Or perhaps it’s also the amazing baked goods that the cafe owner, Treva, creates daily that are perfectly paired with that coffee.  Or, maybe, actually, Treva is the draw and the coffee and all the rest are just a part of what is setting his heart racing at each encounter.  Unfortunately for Jonny, Treva is as stubborn and determined to keep a safe distance between them as Jonny is sure that they could have so much more if she’d let her guard down enough to get to know the real person he’s becoming.

Treva wants no part of romance ever again.  A very bad breakup has proven to her that she’s best on her own, independent, relying on no one but herself.  Jonny might be handsome, and interesting, and, well, sure, she’s tempted to let him into her life.  But he hasn’t embraced the Amish way of life yet, and it feels like there are things he’s not telling her, and that has all of her defensive thoughts on edge.

I completely enjoyed stepping back into this world once again.  There are changes coming for this broken family, as the siblings’ father steps back into the picture, looking for forgiveness from them and his parents, and perhaps redemption as well.  Martin (from the first story) still hesitates in his decisions.  Jonny and Treva will need to face down her past before they can find that happiness that is just beyond reach right now.  And Jonny needs to find a way to tell his grandmother that, well, her cooking isn’t really healthy for him anymore… I got more than a few chuckles as his grandfather advised him to “pick his battles”.  You’ll see.

B for Bonnet by Shelley Shepard Gray is well-written, emotional, and engaging.  I’m loving getting to understand this family in all of their differences and choices.  If you love an entertaining Amish romance with a lively group of characters looking for their life’s purpose and a life-mate as well, then you’d love this one.
