Sheriff’s Honor is the second title in the His to Protect series, bringing us the intense relationship between Meredith and Wade.  Meredith is accustomed to living on edge, constantly aware that her life is in danger should her ex ever find her.  Using an alias, she’s hoping that this small town will keep her and her secrets hidden from the man who would not hesitate to end her life.  She’s taken on the role of caregiver to a woman with secrets of her own.  Her trio of dogs gives her comfort and a sense of protection in her constantly looking over her shoulder life.  She’s not afraid to protect herself… and pulls a shotgun on the one man who will, eventually, protect her with his life.

To say that Wade’s family is dysfunctional would be the understatement of the year.  He’s returned home, taking on the deputy sheriff job as a way to watch over his mother, hopefully convince her to enter rehab for her drinking and occasional drug problems.  The last thing he’d expected was to be met with a beautiful stranger aiming a shotgun at him when he entered his home on the family ranch.  Or to find that despite their rocky beginning, he’d do just about anything to take the haunted look from her eyes.

Sheriff’s Honor is intense, both in its storyline and in the relationships we’ll find within Meredith and Wade’s story.  Add in a cold case mystery, and you’ll find a romance that will keep you on edge throughout as the clues and the surprises are revealed.  I enjoyed this couple’s romance, which started out so differently from how it ended.  They each carry baggage from their pasts, and each has issues that need to be put to rest before that happy ending is possible for them.  Getting to that point was an emotional, satisfying reading experience.  If you like your romances with a side order of danger, then you’d love Sheriff’s Honor.
