She’s building a future on his land.  He has to take it away.

When former rodeo rider Jordan Matthews inherits a ranch from the father he never knew, he plans to sell it fast—until he learns the deal comes with one condition: the property must be empty. Lil McAllen refuses to leave. After losing her father and her home, Lil has rebuilt everything on that land—for herself and her younger sister. Walking away isn’t an option.

If Jordan can’t force her out, the deal collapses—and with it, his only chance to leave the past behind for good. Then the ranch becomes a target. Fences are cut. Equipment is sabotaged. Livestock disappears. With danger closing in, Jordan has no choice but to stay and protect what isn’t his—working side by side with the woman who stands in his way.

Lil doesn’t take risks. Jordan is nothing but risk. But the longer he stays, the harder it is to ignore the truth—the man who came to take everything might be the one she can’t afford to lose.

Title:  The Cowboy’s Reckoning
Series:  Bad Boys of the Rodeo #3

My Rating:  4.5 stars

The Cowboy’s Reckoning is the third title in the Bad Boys of the Rodeo series, bringing us Jordan and Lil’s rather complicated romance.  We’ve met Jordan before in the earlier stories of this series; now he’s returning to a newly inherited ranch just outside of Marietta, Montana…inherited from a father he never knew existed, and certainly wants nothing to do with now since the man couldn’t acknowledge him as a son when it would have mattered.  A quick sale is all Jordan can think about.  Until a huge complication arises when he discovers Lil and her sister living on the ranch, which must be emptied before the sale he’s depending on can go through.  The sisters have a lease that runs for years, and Jordan can’t do anything about that sale now.  That might have been the end of it, except mysterious and deadly things are happening to equipment and livestock on that ranch, and Jordan has decided to stick around to protect the ladies and the property.  He never could have imagined who was after his ranch, or that the love of his life would be right in front of him, also fighting for the ranch alongside him.

I have yet to read a story by Jeannie Watt that I didn’t fall in love with her characters or be fully engaged in their story.  That’s an excellent reason I never pass up one of her books, especially when Marietta, Montana is mentioned anywhere in the story.  (Yes, I love that small fictional town that has grown so much over the years!)  Life has taught Lil that people rarely stay, so even though she’s attracted to Jordan, she’s not planning to fall for the man she’s sure will let her down, as everyone else has.  Yet that spark between them is growing into something far more than either expected, especially when the ranch is under attack by unseen enemies.  Watching both of their carefully erected walls around hearts wounded before begin to fall was an emotional journey.  The suspense and danger ratchet up steadily, and by the story’s ending there are twists and turns that were completely unexpected (by me).  Their story is well-written, engaging, emotional, and passionate, keeping my attention focused on what in the world is happening at that ranch.  If that sounds like your kind of Modern Western Romance, then you’d love Lil and Jordan’s romance in The Cowboy’s Reckoning.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the author or the author’s team via Booksprout, and I sincerely thank them for their trust. I chose to leave a review and share my personal opinion of this book.*
