He was hired to bury my story. He moved me into his house instead.
Eight weeks in a Beacon Hill townhouse with a locked door on the fourth floor. One truth a night, at nine, in the kitchen under the street. He picks which one.
I’m an investigative reporter, and Ronan Doyle is the man who buries stories like mine. He ruined four people this month, and nobody in this city can tell you where he was standing.
I came here to take him apart.
By the second week, I was going down those stairs early, sitting close enough to feel the heat coming off him. He’d stand on the other side of that counter with his sleeves shoved up and tell me things nobody living had heard, then look at my mouth about a second too long and send me up to bed.
Night twenty-eight, he didn’t send me to bed.
He came around the counter and took me up to his.
He told me he was in love with me, and I said it back before he’d finished the sentence, because that man has never lied to me.
Then he answered a question I should never have asked.
Now I have four thousand words that will end him, every one of them out of his own mouth.
And there’s no version of this where I keep the story and keep him.

Title: The Fixer’s Confession
Series: Devils We Keep #1
Author: Stephie Rose
Published: September 29, 2026
My Rating: 4.5 stars
The Fixer’s Confession begins the Devils We Keep series, although this first story can completely stand on its own with no trouble at all. (But I’m still going to follow this series for more!)
The underlying fire between Layla and Ronon is apparent from the opening page and only builds with every encounter between them (and some while apart, too). Layla is an investigative reporter with the stubbornness of a feral cat over a piece of food, and the intelligence to know when she’s in over her head… but that won’t stop her. Ronan is a man who “fixes” things, and I’m not talking about using a hammer (although, never mind). He is definitely morally gray. He gives off the same vibes as a feral cat ready to pounce on its dinner. I frankly believe saying much more in this review will only expose spoilers that would steal this amazing story from other readers. (And I don’t do that on purpose.)
Layla and Ronan’s story is well-written, engaging, emotional, passionate, and easily swept me into their world and held me captive until the final page. If you love an intense romance with danger, hidden agendas, and a couple you can’t help but be glued to the pages for… then you’ll want this one right now. I really need the next story in this series; that’s definitely on my radar.
