Cover Description:
What would you do if you discovered the men you were dating were fictional characters you’d created long ago?
Thirty-five-year-old Catherine Schreiber has shelved love for good. Keeping her ailing bookstore afloat takes all her time, and she’s perfectly fine with that. So when several men ask her out in short order, she’s not sure what to do…especially since something about them seems eerily familiar.
Caught between fantasy and reality, Cat must decide which—or whom—she wants more.
Blending humor with unusual twists, including a magical manuscript, a computer scientist in shining armor, and even a Regency ball, A Man of Character tells a story not only of love, but also of the lengths we’ll go for friendship, self-discovery, and second chances.
Read on for my thoughts on A Man of Character. No true spoilers, promise.
What would you do if you had the power to create the perfect man? The ideal lover? The prince among men who catered to your every whim and desire? Would you? Would that perfect man be different for various times in your life or would he be steadfastly the same throughout your life?
Or would you rather take the unknown chances with an average guy who grew to love you naturally and for your true self?
It’s an interesting concept, and certainly one that Cat doesn’t believe in at all. Until… the men she’s meeting are instantly attracted to her and each one is so very similar to the heroes in stories she’s written throughout her life. Of course, that’s not possible, is it?
A Man of Character takes us on a journey of possibilities – what if one woman could actually write her perfect, ideal, loving man into existence? Cat has come into possession of a beautiful manuscript, one that her father intended to give to her on her 25th birthday, according to her grandmother’s instructions. But he couldn’t do that so it came to her ten years later. From the moment she receives this beautifully illustrated, apparently priceless book her world begins to change with men suddenly entering her life. Men who seem vaguely familiar, until she discovers their true origins.
This captivating story is full of romance with a touch of fantasy, paranormal – even a touch of Regency through Cat’s best friend Eliza’s fascination with that time period. A story that will draw you in from the very beginning, and one with twists and turns… and many chuckles along the way. A Man of Character is one of those stories that tell many tales and one of those tales is the strong, abiding friendship between Cat and Eliza. Friends who would do anything for each other… anything to bring them happiness.
I’ll leave you to discover all of the nuances of this story, for to tell too much more would spoil the reading of it for yourself. Still, this is a story that I’m betting you will find fascinating and insightful. I enjoyed my time in this world very much and would definitely recommend it for readers of romance in any genre. It’s charming, funny, sad and poignant. And now, if you’ll excuse me I need to go get Eliza’s story in A Matter of Time. I’m looking forward to that read.
