A Texas Soldier’s Vow continues The Men of Service series with Luke and Samantha’s unexpected romance. Another former soldier is heading for Service, Texas… having no clue that his life is about to change, for the better. Because of one of his friends’ wives suggestion, Luke teamed up with young Mattie on a school science project a while ago. They hadn’t met in person, but the little girl and her mom, Samantha (Sam), became pen pals, continuing the connection long after the school project was over. Sam is a divorced vet whose clinic has been broken into and drugs stolen. Unknown to Sam, Mattie has contacted Luke for help. Something Sam is particularly annoyed with, since she does not take “advice” easily from any man after the way her controlling, cheating ex-husband treated her. The tension between them is intense.
Luke is currently traveling the West, photographing interesting locations and experiencing the local one-night-stand life. (sigh) At one time, I would have closed the book at this early point. Yet, I’ve learned to let the characters tell me their story, the one that isn’t ‘in our face’ from the first pages. Luke has his reasons for his decisions/actions. Are they right for me? No. But they made sense to Luke, and that is what matters to the story. Once he meets Samantha and has developing feeling for her, even if they confuse him, the one-night stands stop. And that was important to me. As the danger and the attraction between them deepen, this couple will need to decide if taking a risk on forever is right for them.
I enjoyed A Texas Soldier’s Vow very much. Watching both Luke and Samantha grow and accept that life could be different for them with the right person was an emotional, satisfying journey. Their story is well-written, emotional, with touches of laughter and tears scattered about. If you enjoy a story that touches your heart, then you’d love this one.
