As the nation’s youngest virologist and hematologist, Captain Sophia Perry has always been one step ahead of her peers. But there’s one thing she can’t beat—cancer. She wants to make a difference in the time she has left, so when she’s sent to investigate a breakout at a Syrian refugee camp, she goes, saying nothing of her diagnosis. But saving the masses isn’t easy when the man tasked to protect her is so irresistible.

Communications Sergeant Connor Button is back on active duty after a deadly explosion, but he doesn’t feel whole again until he meets Sophia. Assigned to keep her safe, he’s prepared to die for her, but for the first time in months he truly wants to live—if only she wasn’t so determined to put them both in danger.

With a secret to keep and nothing to lose, Sophia is determined to find the source of the breakout at any cost. Violent attacks on the camp convince her that someone wants her to pay dearly. But as Sophia’s health deteriorates, Connor must find a way to help her defeat her enemies before her body defeats her.

Read on for my thoughts on Lethal Game.  No true spoilers, promise.

As we head into the next installment of the Biological Response Team series, the nasty biological terrorist is still on the loose and leaving death and destruction in his wake.  Sophia is a brilliant scientist, a woman who speaks her mind without concern of how she is taken.  She is a woman in the military and she knows how to handle herself.  Yet, she cannot handle what her body is doing to her.  Even after fighting childhood cancer, and having that death threat pushed into remission for so many years now she’s fighting her own body once more.  With bravery, determination and a kick ass attitude, Sophia will continue on this mission without telling anyone of the physical fight she is engaged in.  Her life will matter, and even if she should lose her own battle she will do everything in her power to help the innocent victims of a madman.

Connor has been assigned to Sophia, call him a bodyguard, watchdog or simply a fellow soldier fighting the same war.  He doesn’t really care what anyone else thinks of him.  He has his own agenda and revenge is constantly on his mind.  His teammates will not have died in vain, not if he has his way.  What he didn’t count on was a spunky, outspoken officer with an attitude, no filters in her talk and a woman who doesn’t know the meaning of the word danger.  As they work side by side, Connor begins to let emotions in once again, emotions that aren’t centered around revenge.  He would protect Sophia with his own life, but right now he’d rather they both survive this mission to make their own life together…for whatever time they might have.

Lethal Game is an intense look into the world of madness and the people who must survive in that world, not only survive but change it for the protection of others.  I enjoyed Sophia immensely.  She’s a strong woman who doesn’t know how to do anything halfway.  She might have been handed a rotten hand of cards, but she fights back, doesn’t even think of holding back and goes after what she wants.  Connor is a darker horse, his wounds are internal and he will fight to not only overcome the enemy but his own demons.  As well as fight for and with Sophia.  These two make a very strong, believable couple.

The story is action packed throughout with enough vulnerable moments to make the situation and the people very real.  I would not hesitate to recommend Lethal Game to any reader who enjoys romantic thrillers, military romances or simply a good love story.  You don’t have to have read the first novel in this series, but as with any series it would enhance your enjoyment, in my opinion.

*I received an e-ARC of Lethal Game from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
