A blow to the head with a block of amethyst has left multibillionaire Nathan Barrister dead—while nearby, a vault, its door ajar, sits filled with priceless paintings, jewelry, and other treasures. Lieutenant Eve Dallas’s husband, Roarke—who misspent his youth in Ireland as a scrappy thief—recognizes at least two stolen pieces among the hoard. The crime scene suggests a burglar caught in the act. But only one item seems to be missing.

Then it’s revealed that the vault had actually belonged to the victim’s late father—and no one in the household knew it was there until a recent remodeling project exposed it. To protect the family name and business, they explain to Eve that they’d been looking for a way to return the ill-gotten gains anonymously and avoid the police. But now the police are all over their elegant house, and have a bigger, bloodier mystery to solve.

By all accounts, Nathan Barrister was a good man, a generous employer, a devoted husband and father. As for his father—he clearly had secrets. Now it’s up to Eve and her team to find out if those secrets got Nathan killed—and if it was a crime of passion or revenge.

Title:  Stolen in Death
Series:  …in Death #62
Author:  J.D. Robb
Published:  February 3, 2026
Publisher:  St. Martin’s Press
My Rating:  5 stars

I’ve followed Eve and Roarke from the very beginning, before the world knew who exactly J.D. Robb actually is.  And I have to put Stolen in Death in the top 5 of all 62 titles, plus the novellas in this ongoing series.  From the opening scene, where we’ll find Eve in a very uncomfortable place for her, willingly following one of those mysterious “marriage rules” by getting all dressed up and attending this gala, in heels no less.  I was hooked.  Add to that smile-worthy opening, we soon get to run into so many familiar faces that we’ve known, in one way or another, from this series.  It really was, for me, a sense of returning to family.  That’s what happens when one follows a group of people over time: those characters become family, perhaps in an odd way.  I don’t think I could have enjoyed myself more.

Anything that you’d need to know before picking up Stolen in Death can be found in the cover description; no spoilers on the crime/mystery.  What you won’t find there is the complete enjoyment of following the clues, along with Eve and crew, as we all try to figure out how and why Nathan was killed.  Weaving those story threads into that completely unexpected conclusion is yet another reason why I love this series so much.

Stolen in Death is well-written, plot-savvy, emotional at times, comforting in its portrayal of old friendships, and kept me on edge as I tried to figure out who and why.  If that’s the kind of slightly futuristic police procedural/murder/mystery you reach for, then you’d enjoy Eve and Roarke’s latest adventure.
