A new life filled with the celebrated seaside charm and small-town heart of Martha’s Vineyard, a newfound family, romance—and an exciting venture. What more could Maddie Clarke ask for?  And why would anyone want to stop her?

It’s been a life-changing year since Maddie moved to the picturesque, historic fishing village of Menemsha on Martha’s Vineyard, where her late mother was born. Maddie has rediscovered her grandmother, her own Indigenous roots as a half-Wampanoag, and the tribe’s rich history and traditions. She’s also found an unexpected second chance at love with restaurateur Rex Winsted. And then she spots a vacant shop right on the harbor . . .

Maddie boldly decides to end her days as a college journalism professor and open a bookshop that will also serve teas her grandmother makes from island herbs. Maddie’s son, Rafe, a college senior, plans to craft baskets in the ancient Wampanoag way, sell them at the store, and donate the profits to benefit Wampanoag kids. For Maddie, it’s all too good to be true . . . until the threats begin.

Not wanting to spoil the dream, Maddie tells no one. But an unexpected incident worsens the situation, and just as the shop is about to open, revelations from the past erupt. And another surprise ahead could radically impact not only Maddie’s future, but Rex’s, too. Facing a decision she never saw coming, Maddie learns that even peaceful waters must weather storms . . .

Title:  The Little Bookshop by the Harbor
Series:  Up Island #2
Author:  Jean Stone
Published:  April 28, 2026
Publisher:  Kensington Books
My Rating:  4 stars

The Little Bookshop by the Harbor is the second title in the Up Island series.  I would strongly suggest reading this series in order, as the story really builds upon the previous one.  I would have benefited so much if I’d read Up Island first.  I’ve put the first story in my Kindle Unlimited library so I can go back and perhaps get the bigger picture of this series from the start.

Maddie has returned to her roots in Menemsha, on Martha’s Vineyard, as she embraces not only her Wampanoag heritage but also settles in with her grandmother and the new man in her life, Rex, who owns a restaurant on the island.  When a former bait shop closes, Maddie lets herself dream of opening a bookshop to deepen her roots in this area.  Great idea in theory, unfortunately, there’s someone on the island who doesn’t want her business to begin, let alone flourish.  She hides the threatening notes for a very long time, not wanting to upset her family or the plans for her shop.  When Rex makes a trip out of town, even more emotional upheaval is about to descend upon Maddie.

I liked The Little Bookshop by the Harbor.  I need to read the first book, then, perhaps, do a reread of this one in the near future.  I found the story well-written, informative, and emotional, and at times it kept me on edge as facts were revealed.  Overall, an enjoyable reading experience.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley, and I sincerely thank the author or publishing house for their trust. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
