Mara Bennett has spent twelve years being the wife who understands.

She understood the minor leagues. The injuries. The travel. The sponsors. The interviews. The endless last-minute things that somehow needed Grant more urgently than she did.

And Grant loves her for it.  He just got a little too comfortable believing she would always understand.  So when Mara asks for one thing, to show up on time for the arts-foundation gala she’s spent six months building, Grant promises he’ll be there.

Then his team wins.  One postgame obligation becomes another.  Then another.  Cameras are everywhere, his beautiful publicist is beside him, and when someone asks why he isn’t already at his wife’s event, Grant laughs.

“Mara’s good. She always understands.”

Unfortunately for Grant, Mara hears him.  And for the first time in twelve years, she decides she’s done understanding.

Now Grant has to figure out how to save a marriage he genuinely thought was safe, while Mara starts building a life that no longer moves every time his does.  He loves her.  She still loves him.  That doesn’t mean she has to come back.

No cheating. No secret affair. He just managed to screw up the best thing in his life entirely on his own.

The Wife He Thought Would Understand begins The Husbands Who Lost Them series.  Mara and Grant’s story stands entirely on its own, but the other titles in this “series” also follow the same theme: a marriage in crisis.

Mara and Grant have a strong marriage; it has survived Grant’s move from the minor leagues to the hectic pace of the major leagues.  Or at least Grant always thought it was.  Yes, he understood that he often had to fit career-related things into their shared life, that sometimes things ran over, and he had to make choices.  He never realized he kept choosing “his” things, always assuming his wife would adjust her life for him.  Until the night he made a promise he failed to keep, an important night for Mara, and a tossed-off comment to a reporter that quickly went viral… it all proved he saw his life/career as central and important; Mara’s, not so much.  Because she “never minded”… until she did.  Until it became vitally important to her, and he kept taking just “5 minutes more” several times, until there was no time left for his promise to her, his wife.

The Wife He Thought Would Understand is well-written and emotional.  In many ways, it’s a slow-burning romance of a marriage in deep trouble.  Not because the couple fell out of love, but because one grew larger while the other kept shrinking until they almost disappeared.  No heated arguments, no other woman, no nasty hidden secrets to unveil.  Simply a marriage where one partner took, without realizing or truly understanding, what they were taking from the person they loved.  Until it was almost too late to fix, and Grant tried to fix it early in their separation, to no avail.  But the fact remains that until he really sees what he’s been doing to Mara, her art, her chosen career, and their marriage, there is no going back, no do-over.  If this sounds like your kind of Contemporary Romance/Marriage in Crisis Romance, then you’d enjoy this one.
