The Montana Cowboy’s Last Mission is the fifth and final title in the Cowboys of Honor series. I’ve enjoyed this reissued series so much as a reread, and, frankly, coming to the end of it is just as bittersweet as it was the first time I read about these amazing men and their equally strong and stubborn women. So, let’s return to Marietta, Montana, for one final soldier to complete his mission for his fallen comrade and friend, Jace, while finally falling for a woman he never saw coming… but cannot imagine a life without now.
Cal (Calhoun) and Jory’s story is intense, full of secrets and past hurts that affected the people they’ve become today. Jory never intended to set foot in Marietta ever again. She has a past here, and it’s only because of a contract as a traveling doctor that she has temporarily returned. Cal is in town to solve a mystery, or try his best with what information remains about Jory’s father and brother’s disappearances years ago. Strangers passing in the night, so to speak, this couple will have one passionate night together, neither expecting nor intending their connection to last beyond this one night. Surprise! Their connection becomes complicated when Cal ends up in the ER and Jory is assigned as his doctor… professionally, ethically, Jory cannot acknowledge that relationship or risk her job. But when did rules matter when fate has other plans for a couple?
As Cal, along with the help of the other former military friends already settled in Marietta, the race to learn the truth of those disappearances becomes tension-filled. There are things that Jory isn’t revealing to Cal, and he has a few secrets of his own that he’s holding close to his vest. Watching this couple slowly (and I do mean slowly) lower their walls enough to allow someone else in, to trust them enough with their pasts, and to risk everything for a future together kept me on edge throughout their story. The Montana Cowboy’s Last Mission is well-written, passionate, and emotional as two stubborn people work through the hurts of the past to begin healing and trusting their connection. It was good to see the entire team come together to help finish Jace’s final undone task. I enjoyed this whole series, and even though I’ve been here before, it’s still a bit of a heart tug when it comes time to say goodbye. I’d not hesitate to recommend all of the titles in the Cowboys of Honor series. Now, the wait to see what this amazing author brings us next.
